Google launched a network of free Wi-Fi hotspot to some areas in Lagos, Nigeria on Thursday. This was part of their effort to increase its presence in Africa.

The U.S technology firm owned by Alphabet Inc. has partnered with the Nigerian Fiber Cable Network provider, 21st Century, to provide its public Wi-Fi service, known as Google Station, in six places in Lagos, including the city's airport.

Google Station is a service that allows Google partners to roll out Wi-Fi hotspots in public places by providing software and advice on hardware to turn fibre connections into Wi-Fi.

With this, Google might make available free Wi-Fi facilities in about 200 sites in Lagos and five other states in Nigeria between now and 2009.

The Google Vice President, Anjali Joshi, mentioned that Google embarked on this mainly because the Internat has the potential to completely transform Africa and they plan on extending to other locations very soon.

Other states which would soon receive the free Wi-Fi Hotspot include; Kaduna, Rivers, Oyo, Enugu and Abuja.
